Thames Rib Charter operate a large fleet of 9m Ribcraft Offshore Boats which are both Port of London Authority and Maritime Coastguard Agency coded for passenger carrying operations. A ‘Rib’ stands for Rigid Inflatable Boat, a lightweight and high performance vessel which has a full size conventionally built hull and deck fitted with inflatable sponsons.
The Rib concept was pioneered at Atlantic College in Wales with funding provided by The Royal Navy with the first production vessels entering service as ‘Atlantic’ class lifeboats with the RNLI. The sponsons or tubes give exceptional sea keeping and because they are split into several compartments also provide buoyancy should the hull be compromised.
Our open Ribs are fitted with high performance lean burn Suzuki 250hp four stroke outboard engines, long range fuel tanks, ICOM VHF’s, Garmin colour chart plotters, class ‘A’ AIS transponders and Fusion iPad combatable HiFi. Each Rib has comfortable seating for 8 passengers and two crew, all of whom have individual jockey seats with seat backs as required by The Port of London.
We also have a single 6.5m SOLAS Rib with a Volvo D3 engine coupled to a Hamilton Jet kept in a permanent state of readiness for rapid deployment to vessels requiring an emergency replacement SOLAS craft when the ship’s rescue tender is inoperable.
